History
Unani Tibb Eastern Medicine and Herbalism, sometimes referred to as Sufi or Islamic
medicine, is based on the ancient methods of medicine used and taught
by Hippocrates, Galen and Avicenna and includes elements of healing
systems from Persia, Arabia, India, China and Classical Greece.
A belief central to Tibb, which translates literally as 'nature'
is that good health and a happy state of mind represent the normal
constitution for balanced human beings.
Mizaj
A person can be knocked out of balance by emotional, psychological,
social, environmental or spiritual factors or by diet. Tibb uses
a holistic set of principles to diagnose and treat conditions, based
on each person's body type, personality and mizaj or individual
metabolic constitution. Each item of food we eat or medicine or
herbs we take all have their own mizaj. A medicine or food
that has positive effects for one person may be detrimental to a
person of a different mizaj. It is this factor that Tibb
takes into account when treating patients and selects appropriate
herbal treatments for each individual as well as guiding them in
the appropriate choice of foods for their constitution.
Safe and natural
An important principle governing Tibb medicine is that no treatment
should impair the body's natural functions. The starting point of
treatment is always diet and lifestyle, followed by herbal remedies.
Tibb remedies have been tried and tested over the centuries and
are safe and compatible.
Even the most stubborn and chronic of illnesses can be treated with
Tibb and treatment is extremely effective.
Consultation
In the initial consultation the Tibb practitioner will take a detailed
case history from the patient and make observations of the patient's
skin, tongue, eyes, hands and nails. They will also take the patient's
pulse, as an enormous amount of information can be gleamed from
this in just minutes.
Treatment
Treatment will usually involve lifestyle and dietary changes supplemented
by herbal formulas to counteract and treat any existing imbalances.
A detoxification regime and/or spiritual aromatherapy may also be
included if necessary. Our medicines are based on traditional Tibb
formulas and are not tested on animals. Wherever possible they are
obtained from organic and sustainable sources.
Treatment will always be aimed at rebalancing the patient physically,
emotionally, psychologically and spiritually.
